In a somewhat sudden decision, Koelnmesse, the holding company that controls the Art Berlin fair, as well as the Cologne fair, decided to give up holding the event from now on. Art Berlin has been held for the last three years at the historic Tempelhof airport in September, showing mainly contemporary art. The company has decided, after months of discussions, that the conditions for holding the event in Berlin are not ideal, and that the political and social climate is too unpredictable. Gerald Böse, CEO of Koelnmesse, says that “Under the given conditions, we currently do not see the possibility of holding an event in Berlin that meets our expectations”.
At the beginning of the year, the organizers managed to secure Tempelhof Airport as a venue only at the last minute, and the deal did not extend until 2020, which made it difficult to plan future editions. The fair also did not have the expected revenue, which made the company focus its efforts on the edition of the art fair in Cologne.
