The works of Gaucho artist Karin Lambrecht are born from the interweaving of the subjective world and the natural world, spirit and nature.

The works that the artist will be showing at the Nara Roesler gallery starting tomorrow, the 18th of February, in seasons of the soul (Estações do Espírito) reveal the transformations of his practice since his move from Porto Alegre to Broadstairs, on the island of Thanet, in the United Kingdom.

The colors used refer to the artist's impressions and sensations when impacted by the local landscape and the specificities of light. Warm and cold colors meet harmoniously in subtle gradations.

The artist points out that now the red tones have less to do with the earth, as in previous works, and much more to do with the sky, since in Broadstairs it can acquire a reddish quality at the end of the day.

In addition to color, the word is another recurring element in the artist's practice. They appear on screens in Portuguese, English and, sometimes, German and often give titles to the works. They can evoke a landscape, such as Cliff (Cliff), or a feeling, like Pleasure (Pleasure).

“When I look at the landscape and what is around me, I tend to make small notes, sometimes doodles. In my work, when I write these words mixed with painting, it's what surrounds me. The rain, the trees, the seasons, the sun, the sea, the cliffs”, he told in a video about the exhibition released on the gallery’s YouTube channel.

She explains that she writes words on the canvas in several layers and, when she starts with color, often the foreground of the words disappears, and this, for her, represents the “invisible world”, of feelings, of intuition.

Already on the papers, drawings with sewing lines and delicate stains made with a brush appear. For Lambrecht, these works are a counterpoint to the paintings, allowing for a more expansive gesture and faster production.

Lambrecht, at the beginning of his career, rethought the canvas and the way of painting, eliminating the chassis, sewing fabrics, using charred scraps.

An exponent of the 1980s generation, his works inhabit a space between painting and sculpture, are political as well as material. From the 1990s onwards, he began to include organic materials in his canvases, such as earth and blood.

The text of the exhibition is by David Anfam, writer, curator and specialist in American modern art.
