The painter Rafael Alonso presents his first solo exhibition at Galeria Millan, entitled “Emissary”. In this new series of works, which occupies the Millan Annex – located just 50 meters from the gallery -, Alonso exhibits around 50 paintings that are morphologically different from each other but that carry, in different degrees, the same reasoning: the idea that they would be symptoms of the crisis of a certain idea of “reality”. They are collages of signs that range from the concept of landscape commonly associated with the tropics, as in the work “Chuva Dourada”, passing through the catchy chromaticism of “Delírio Tropical”, to the recent history of Brazilian art with references to concrete projects, as in painting "Scratch".
Humor is a fundamental characteristic and permeates all the works presented in this exhibition. Concepts such as taste and expressiveness are discussed by Alonso's production of images that are at once attractive and disconcerting. Through color, composition, occupation of space, use of materials or use of words, the artist from Rio de Janeiro proposes a reflection on conceptions that are often crystallized of what artistic making would be like.
