Galeria Nara Roesler presents two new exhibitions in its spaces in São Paulo, the solo exhibitions by the Swiss artist Not Vital and the painter from Rio de Janeiro Cristina Canale.
Cristina Canale presents Heads/Speakers, an individual show that has as its axis a series of paintings of female heads in the classic portrait format. Around this narrative, other works unfold in which fragments of human figures, body parts and everyday gestures are represented. Detached from their totality and isolated, these parts acquire another dimension. Coming from the well-known Generation 80, Canale has been interested in the female universe in recent years, which, little by little, ended up taking over her production. Generally based on everyday scenes, his works result from an elaborate work of composition with masses of color, standing out for transiting between figuration and abstraction, opening up possibilities for the subjective imagination of the spectator.
Not Vital brings in “Saudade” a cut of his vast and renowned production. The sculptures and drawings gathered highlight their particular ability to decontextualize, reconfigure and relocate fragments and cultural symbols. The different worlds contained in Vital's work stem from his experience: he was born in 1948 in Sent, Switzerland; at age 18 he moved to Paris; shortly afterwards to Rome; and to New York, in 1976. Since then, he has traveled incessantly to the four corners of the world, having lived and worked periodically in Agadèz (Niger), Lucca (Italy), Beijing (China), Patagonia (Chile) and Rio de Janeiro ( Brazil).
