A medieval painting by the Italian master Cimabue, which went unnoticed for years in a house in France, has sold at auction for a record 24.2 million euros (or $26.8 million). A bidding war at an auction house north of Paris sent the work far exceeding its sales estimate, as collectors scrambled to secure the masterpiece. The work is a small tempera panel and was found in the last European summer, hanging in the kitchen of an elderly French woman.
