Silvia Cintra Gallery + Box 4, Rio de Janeiro

The Silvia Cintra + Box 4 gallery presents the exhibition “Papel de Aço”, by the artist Iole de Freitas. There will be nine small and medium-sized white sculptures that will occupy the gallery space in the same way as they did in the artist's studio throughout the research process, supported only by simple plywood. The new series is an offshoot of the exhibition “The weight of each one”, held by the artist at MAM in Rio de Janeiro on 20-5. That's when Iole left the polyurethane sheets he had been working with for years and focused solely on stainless steel. The challenge of the exhibition in the gallery is to make sculptures on a much smaller scale than those shown in the museum, and to propose a new relationship with them. Now the work no longer relates to space and architecture, but to the body of the work itself.

The beginning of this research was done with ordinary paper, cardboard, which Iole cut and folded, exploring the possibilities of concave and convex. The next step was to transfer this result to aluminum, which is already a thicker and heavier material, and later, in the calender, to reproduce this in steel, the final material for the work. But one element was still missing, color, which arose from the artist's need to bring light and transparency to the sculptures. With countless layers of white paint and sandpaper, Iole manages to reproduce the light, shadow and roughness of paper in the pieces.
