Virus-infected computer sells for US$1.3mi

Recent auctions have brought record prices for works. However, this week an unusual sale marked the art market: a laptop infested with some of the most devastating viruses sold for US$1.345 million dollars. Created as a work of art, the computer was running six different types of harmful programs that, together, caused billionaire damage around the world – “I LOVE YOU”, which circulated in the year 2000; “Sobig”, in 2003; “MyDoom”, in 2004; “DarkTequila”, in 2013; “BlackEnergy”, in 2015; and “WannaCry”, released in 2017. The work, entitled “The Persistence of Chaos” (The Persistence of Chaos) was created by Chinese artist Guo O Dong, who makes use of the internet and current technologies in his research and productions.
