IMS Rio promotes shamanism, seminar and film screening

Between the 22nd and 24th of August, IMS Rio presents a series of activities related to the exhibition Claudia Andujar: the Yanomami struggle, on display at the cultural center. The program includes a seminar, held in partnership with the Museu do Índio and the Casa de Leitura Dirce Côrtes Riedel – Uerj, the exhibition of two films, with presentations by the directors and the indigenous leader Davi Kopenawa, and the Yanomami Pajelança, a shamanic ritual conducted by Kopenawa. All events are free and open to the public.

Entitled Indigenous representations and visual narratives, the seminar will take place on the 22nd and 23rd of August. The first meeting will be held on the 22nd, at 1:30 pm, at the Reading House Dirce Côrtes Riedel (Rua das Palmeiras, 82, Botafogo). Researcher Edgar Kanaykõ, from the Xakriabá indigenous people, will talk to journalist Renata Machado, from the Tupinambá ethnic group, co-founder of Rádio Yandê, the first web indigenous radio in Brazil. The two will talk about the theme of indigenous sounds and visuals.

The second meeting will be on the 23rd, at 10 am, at IMS Rio. Valentina Tong, assistant curator of the Andujar show, will talk about the exhibition's research process. Davi Kopenawa will discuss the perspectives of the Yanomami in view of the current political situation. Then, at 3 pm, the participants of the seminar will be invited to visit the exhibition, having as a starting point the instigations proposed by the IMS education team. The seminar events, both at IMS Rio and at Casa de Leitura, are free, with withdrawal of passwords 30 minutes beforehand.

Also on the 23rd, the IMS Rio cinema will show two films that dialogue with the themes of Andujar's exhibition. At 5:30 pm, the short film will be shown A film for Ehuana, by filmmaker Louise Botkay. The documentary follows the daily life of a family in the Watorik community, in Roraima. Before the session, there will be a talk with the director and Kopenawa.

At 18:30 it will be shown Urihi Haromatipë – Healers of the forestlandin Morzaniel Ɨramari Yanomami, considered the first Yanomami filmmaker. Released in 2014, the feature film shows several shamans gathered to treat the world's ills caused by the white man. The session will be preceded by a speech by Morzaniel and Kopenawa, who participates in the film. The two films will be screened again, starting at 8 pm. Exhibitions are free and subject to capacity.

To close the program, on the 24th, at 11 am, there will be the Yanomami Pajelança, a traditional shamanic ritual conducted by Kopenawa with the participation of experienced shamans Levi Malamahi Alaopeteri Yanomami and Pedrinho Yanomami, who will come especially from the indigenous land in Roraima for the event. During the ceremony, which will take place in the IMS garden, the three will consume the hallucinogenic powder. yakoana, from the virola tree.
