To compose the body of work presented by Galeria Fortes D'Aloia & Gabriel in the exhibition Equivalentes, which opens next Saturday, June 25th, in São Paulo, Valeska Soares used a totally innovative and unprecedented technique: the works are oil paintings of still life that bring the fruits, normally the center of this type of painting, covered by white paint. To carry out this work, Soares spent a good deal of time looking for and buying several still life paintings by different artists around the world, in a meticulous work of artistic mining.

After compiling all the works found, she began to intervene on these canvases covering the fruits with white paint, proposing a redefinition of the work in general that occurs when she “erases” the fruits with paint and leaves only the silhouette of what they once were. were. In this show, the works will be displayed together throughout the gallery, juxtaposed to each other on the pink painted wall, in order to represent a kind of exhibition hall as they used to be. The work evokes themes of desire and memory, as well as unfolding the artist's research on genres in the canon of Art History.

An essay by curator Marília Loureiro develops critical thinking about the exhibition and helps visitors understand the exhibition as a whole. “The work of Valeska Soares addresses unheroic and apparently unimportant narratives. in your work Equivalents (2021), Soares brings together 119 still-life paintings. Painted by unknown authors and purchased by the artist in various parts of the world, the works have different dimensions and techniques used. As in previous works, such as un-rest (2010), Any Moment Now… (2014) and doubleface (2017-2021), the act of collecting is what precedes and gives texture to the work. These are, above all, objects that keep marks, that crystallize habits, that accumulate stories and absorb time. Objects that had other lives. But far from pacifying this set of paintings into a collection, the artist involves it in new webs of meaning, impregnated with mystery”, puts Loureiro in the essay.
