Two new exhibitions will open tomorrow, August 20th, at Massapê Projetos, independent space managed by artist Penalva bro. A solo show by Simone Fontana Reis entitled In the beginning, animals did not exist. and a group show by Renata Pedrosa and Laila Terra entitled Silver Earth Stone.
In In the beginning, animals did not exist., Fontana Reis presents sculptures, paintings and a video. These works are the result of the artist's experiences with Amerindian cultures and with the intelligence of forests. Forest beings populate Simone's imagination and rush into images with mythical tones. Recently, the artist inaugurated the Project Maloca-Escola and Forest with the Huni Kuin Indians, in Acre. The project aims to improve the living conditions of this population, enabling the cultural strengthening of ancestral knowledge and the protection of the forest. On the occasion of the exhibition at Massapê, there will also be an exhibition about the artist's experience with the village and a presentation of the project's paths.
Pedrosa and Terra, on the other hand, present works that dialogue with the city of São Paulo, with the so-called “stone jungle” in a paradoxical arrangement of installations. The works presented here are the way that the artists found to “swallow” and “give back” what São Paulo delivers to its inhabitants: stones, bricks, violence and pollution, transforming all of this into art.
In the open space facing Rua do Massapê projects, Renata Pedrosa installs her radar, which both captures the outside and amplifies what is created inside. Laila Terra builds its ramp anchored by the rammed earth, so characteristic of the traditional construction methods of the local territory. Working together, they bring together licks with images of stones (which we tend to imagine as immutable and, therefore, knowable) and graphics that we cannot decipher.
