Rivane Neuenschwander has just opened her first solo show in Portugal. The exhibition, titled Wild Seeds, is organized around his most recent film, I am a macaw (2022), made in partnership with filmmaker Mariana Lacerda and which had its world premiere during the ongoing exhibition at the Museum and Chapel of Casa de Serralves, in Portugal.
The medium-length film proposes a critical reflection on the impact of deforestation on amazon for indigenous peoples at a time of political and social tension. This work is also the result of a long period of research and a series of actions in São Paulo that made parading through the streets of the city, like a dense and powerful forest, dozens of figures inspired by the Brazilian fauna and flora.
Heir to the historical legacy of post-war avant-garde movements, from Neoconcretism to Tropicália, Rivane Neuenschwander is one of the most highly regarded names in Brazilian contemporary art. In her work, the artist combines different media and supports to build a unique visual repertoire that explores narratives on a wide range of themes, including language and time, literature and popular culture, psychoanalysis and art, nature and society, politics and philosophy, fear and desire. One of his most iconic works, I wish your wish (2003), composed of a collection of wishes reminiscent of Senhor do Bonfim's bracelets, will be installed in the Chapel of Casa de Serralves.
