Mega itinerant Marc Chagall exhibition starts in Rio

'Marc Chagall: dream of love' brings together more than 180 works at CCBB RJ and will also tour Brasília, Belo Horizonte and São Paulo

The imaginative and fanciful universe of Marc Chagall (1887-1985), one of the great painters of the 20th century, can be explored in depth in Marc Chagall: Dream of Lover, on display at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil Rio de Janeiro until June 6.

With a panoramic character, the exhibition covers the artist's career from 1922 to 1980, covering almost all of his creative period. Between this year and next, the individual should also pass through Brasília, Belo Horizonte and São Paulo.

Despite the turbulent period in which he lived — Chagall faced two world wars, the Russian Revolution and Nazism —, the artist stated that only love interested him and that he was in contact only with “things that revolve around love”

Divided into sections and featuring oils, tempera, gouaches and engravings, the exhibition is guided by the same feeling that guided the artist. “Despite this life full of difficulties, Chagall does not allow himself to be carried away by pessimism, and in his works he transmits a message of hope. If we transfer this situation to the current moment, with a pandemic, economic crisis and generalized discouragement, art, Chagall's work, its beauty, its color, is a palliative in the face of so much suffering”, says curator Lola Durán Úcar.

According to her, the sessions are dedicated to the main topics of interest to the artist. “The Russian and Jewish rituals and traditions that he lives in his childhood; his deep spirituality, from which creations of great intensity are born, highlighting his works around the Bible and Exodus; literature, fundamental in his life, and his relationships with writers and editors, or his work as a text illustrator; his fascination with the circus and his love for Paris, the city that welcomed him. And beyond that, love, which for Chagall was the feeling that gives meaning to life and art.”

At CCBB RJ, the contemporary installation Air Fountain, by artist Daniel Wurtzel, welcomes visitors to the exhibition. The idea is that Wurtzel's fabric ballet can dialogue, in an abstract way, with the notion of love undertaken by Chagall in his oneiric canvases, with floating characters, fauna and flora living in harmony.

The exhibition is an opportunity to understand or deepen knowledge about Chagall's work, and it is also good news at a time when Russian personalities have been purposely “cancelled” and persecuted. Diametrically opposed to Putin, Chagall presents a world of poetry that the president seems not to know.
